Description
1977 Aston Martin V8 Series III Sport Saloon
In the mid-1960s, Aston Martin was beginning to draw up the replacement for its DB6 flagship, and wanted to move away from the smooth curves of the outgoing model. Designed to be V8 powered, the car known as the Aston Martin V8 went on sale in April 1972 to the European market. This example is a 1977 model known as the Series III cars, and was sold new through Continental Motors Inc. in LaGrange, Illinois. More recently, the car spent time with a collector in Germany, before being purchased by the consignor in 2022 at a Bonhams auction.
Finished in Royal Claret, the Aston Martin V8 is easily one of the most muscular designs to ever come out of the Aston Martin studio and looks both tough and dignified in this color scheme. Penned by Aston Martin designer William Towns, it was freely admitted that some aspects of the design were taken from the Mustang Fastbacks of the 1960s, although the overall shape was arguably more refined. As the V8 was entirely hand-built at the Newport Pagnell factory, it is said that in excess of 1,200 hours were spent on each vehicle, which lead to an exceptionally high price when new. In light of this, it is estimated less than 1,000 Series III cars were produced between 1973 and 1978, with just 262 cars delivered in 1977.
The interior is one of the absolute highlights---finished in natural leather, the V8 was built for high-speed touring in optimal comfort. Slide into the nicely cushioned driver's seat, and you are met by a 3-spoke steering wheel, that frames a set of Smiths white on black gauges. The view out the windshield is equally as exciting with a large central hood scoop, paired with almost torpedo-like fender toppers that help you aim the car down the road. The inside features 2+2 seating, a power sunroof, power windows, and a fold-down rear armrest. It is not extravagant but everything you could hope for in a classic car is present and finished to a very high level.
Powering this car is a 5.3-liter dual overhead cam V8 conceived by Aston Martin's legendary engine designer Tadek Marek. Topped with four two-bbl Weber carburetors, the V8 produced 305 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, and with the 3-speed automatic found in this example, could run from 0-60 mph in just 6.1 seconds. Additionally, this car is fitted with power steering, 4-wheel disc brakes and dual exit exhaust with polished tips which make an outstanding noise when you're pressing on. Thanks to a recent servicing through Park Place, this car is running well and ready to be used.
Seeing an Aston Martin V8 from this era in the United States is a real rarity. With only 1,000 built, likely a very small fraction made their way stateside, with many of those then returning to Europe over the years. For its time, this was one of the fastest cars on the road, and few other vehicles paired this kind of performance with great luxury, making this a real gentlemen's express in period. If you want to experience the epitome of 1970s grand touring for yourself, there is no better car to do it with.
